Disclosure
Florida health insurance regulation places strong emphasis on disclosure. That means the exam often asks not just what the policy covers, but also:
- What the consumer must be told
- How the product may be described
- How renewal and cancellation must be handled
Renewal Agreements / Non Renewal and Cancellation
Health insurance policies may be written on different renewal bases, and the exam expects you to know the difference. Common renewal classifications include:
- Guaranteed renewable
- Conditionally renewable
- Noncancellable
Why this matters: These labels define the insurer’s right to continue or discontinue coverage.
Example
If a policy is guaranteed renewable, the insurer generally cannot cancel it because the insured’s health has worsened, though premiums may be adjusted by class.
- Cancellation vs. Nonrenewal: As with other lines:
- Cancellation ends the policy before the end of the term
- Nonrenewal means the policy is not continued when the term ends
Advertising
Advertising is a major compliance area in Florida health insurance. Advertisements must be:
- Truthful
- Clear
- Not misleading
- Not deceptive in what they imply or omit
This is especially important when marketing:
- Limited benefit products
- Medicare Supplement policies
- Dread disease policies
- Long-Term Care policies
Example
If an ad makes a limited hospital indemnity policy sound like it is full major medical coverage, that is likely misleading.
