Gram-positive bacilli (rods) of medical importance include Clostridia, Bacillus species, Listeria, and Corynebacteria. Actinomycetes and Nocardia are also gram-positive, branching filamentous bacteria; you’ll cover them later along with Mycobacteria.
Bacteria in the genera Bacillus and Clostridia form endospores that contain dipicolinic acid. These spores are highly resistant to extreme environmental conditions, including heat, freezing, drying, and radiation. Because of this resistance, spores can persist in the environment for thousands of years or longer.
