You’ve officially completed the NPTE-PTA exam prep course - an important milestone on your journey to becoming a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. Now it’s time to apply everything you’ve learned and tackle the National Physical Therapy Exam for PTAs (NPTE-PTA).

Next steps: testing registration

To register for the NPTE-PTA exam, follow these steps:

1. Create an FSBPT account: Visit the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) website.
2. Register for the exam on FSBPT: log in to your FSBPT account, register, and pay the exam fee.
3. Get approved to test: your state licensing authority (or FSBPT, in jurisdictions that use the Alternate Approval Pathway) must approve you before the jurisdiction approval deadline, so submit your state licensure application early.
4. Schedule your exam: After registration, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter with instructions for scheduling through Prometric.

Exam details

• Exam cost: The FSBPT exam fee is $485. Prometric charges a separate testing-center fee, and your jurisdiction may charge its own application or licensure fees. Confirm current amounts on fsbpt.org before paying.
• Passing score: You need a scaled score of 600 or higher (on a scale of 200-800) to pass.
• Retake policy: If you do not pass, you must wait until the next available scheduled test date to reattempt (jurisdictions may impose stricter limits). You’re allowed up to 3 attempts in a 12-month period and no more than 6 lifetime attempts. Candidates who receive two scaled scores below 400 are no longer eligible to take the NPTE-PTA.
• Exam structure: The 180 questions are mostly stand-alone items, with scenario-based sets of 2-5 questions grouped at the end of each of the exam’s four sections. Budget about 80 seconds per question on average.
• Testing format: The NPTE-PTA is a computer-based exam offered in-person at Prometric testing centers. Virtual testing is not currently available.
• Formula sheet/calculator: No personal calculators or formula sheets are allowed. An on-screen calculator will be provided if necessary.
• Testing accommodations: If you require accommodations (e.g., extra time, separate room), submit a request via your jurisdiction and FSBPT with proper documentation well in advance.

Helpful tips for the final weeks and test day

• Review NPTE-style questions regularly.
• Simulate test conditions with timed practice exams.
• Know your testing center location and arrive early.
• Bring two valid forms of ID (one government-issued photo ID plus a second ID with your name and signature), with names that exactly match your ATT letter.
• Stay calm and pace yourself. You have four hours for 180 questions.

Last look: A few recurring traps to keep in mind:

• As a PTA, you collect data and report to the supervising PT - you don’t perform evaluations or change the plan of care.
• If a patient has an adverse vital sign response during an intervention, stop the activity and report it.
• Know the difference between a contraindication (don’t proceed) and a precaution (proceed with caution and modifications).

Dump sheet

Many test takers use “dump sheets” as study supplements and as a way to create a legal reference during the exam. A dump sheet typically includes visual guides and condensed notes on key topics. The idea is to memorize the material ahead of time and then “dump” it onto your notepad at the beginning of the exam.

These are allowed in the test center as long as they are created after the test has started (and not during the initial tutorial). They aren’t required to succeed, but some test takers find them helpful.
