To register for the NPTE-PTA exam, follow these steps:
- Create an FSBPT Account: Visit the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) website.
- Apply for exam eligibility: Submit an application to your state licensing authority to confirm you’re eligible to test.
- Register for the exam on FSBPT: Once approved, log in to your FSBPT account to register for the exam.
- Schedule your exam: After registration, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter with instructions for scheduling through Prometric.
Exam details
- Exam cost: The NPTE-PTA exam costs $485, paid through the FSBPT website. Additional fees may apply depending on your state board requirements.
- Passing score: You need a scaled score of 600 or higher (on a scale of 200–800) to pass.
- Retake policy: If you do not pass, you must wait at least 60 days before reattempting. You’re allowed up to 3 attempts in a 12-month period and no more than 6 lifetime attempts.
- Testing format: The NPTE-PTA is a computer-based exam offered in-person at Prometric testing centers. Virtual testing is not currently available.
- Formula sheet/calculator: No personal calculators or formula sheets are allowed. An on-screen calculator will be provided if necessary.
- Testing accommodations: If you require accommodations (e.g., extra time, separate room), submit a request via your jurisdiction and FSBPT with proper documentation well in advance.
Helpful tips for test day
- Review NPTE-style questions regularly.
- Simulate test conditions with timed practice exams.
- Don’t cram the night before. Rest and prepare your test materials.
- Know your testing center location and arrive early.
- Bring valid ID as specified in your ATT letter.
- Stay calm and pace yourself. You have four hours for 200 questions.
