Introduction

Welcome to the NPTE Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Course! This course is designed to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to succeed as a PTA, preparing you for the NPTE-PTA exam. Through a combination of theoretical learning, practical exercises, and clinical experiences, you’ll build the foundation to thrive in your profession and positively impact patient care.

Course description

The PTA course covers a wide range of topics, including anatomy, physiology, therapeutic interventions, patient care techniques, and professional responsibilities. You will learn to assist physical therapists by implementing the plan of care they establish, collecting data, performing clinical tasks under supervision, and communicating changes in patient status to the supervising PT.

PTA scope of practice: The supervising physical therapist evaluates the patient, sets goals, and establishes (or modifies) the plan of care. The PTA implements that plan, collects data, and recognizes and communicates changes in patient status to the PT - the PTA does not evaluate, set goals, or change the plan of care. Keep this distinction in mind, since the exam returns to it across every system covered in this course.

Eligibility for the NPTE-PTA exam

To be eligible for the NPTE-PTA exam, you must graduate from an accredited PTA program and meet the eligibility criteria established by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT). Additional requirements may vary by state, so it is important to check with your state board for specific eligibility details.

Exam format

The NPTE-PTA exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions. These questions are designed to assess your knowledge in areas such as patient care, interventions, clinical decision-making, and professional responsibilities covering topics of cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, integumentary, other systems, and non-systems content. The exam is computer-based, and you will have 4 hours to complete it.

The passing score for the PTA NPTE (National Physical Therapy Exam) is 600, on a scale of 200 to 800.

• The score is scaled, meaning it reflects your performance adjusted for difficulty, not just the number of questions you answered correctly.
• You do not need a specific percentage of questions correct to pass - the raw score needed to pass can vary slightly with each version of the exam due to differences in difficulty.
• FSBPT does not publish a percentage-correct target, so focus on mastering the content rather than on a raw-score goal.
