Introduction
Welcome to AP Statistics!
This course introduces the main ideas and tools statisticians use to collect data, analyze it, and draw conclusions. The AP Statistics Exam, offered by the College Board each May, can earn you university credit or advanced placement in an introductory statistics course at many postsecondary institutions.
You’ll learn how to:
- design studies and collect data appropriately
- explore patterns in data using graphs and numerical summaries
- use probability and simulation to model randomness
- apply statistical inference to real-world scenarios
AP Statistics is typically taken in grades 11-12. Many schools expect a strong grade in the prerequisite course (often Algebra II or Integrated Math III). A common benchmark is around 85% or higher, but the exact cutoff depends on your school.
Common prerequisites and expectations
- Completion of Algebra 2, Integrated Math 3, or an equivalent (generally a requirement)
- Introductory level data & descriptive statistics (from Algebra 1 or Integrated Math 1)
- Basic probability intuition (from Geometry or Integrated Math 1+2)
- General understanding of using the TI-84 calculator (from Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 2+3)
Exam format
The AP Statistics exam is a 3-hour exam with two main sections:
- Section 1: Multiple Choice (counts for 50% of your total exam score)
- About 40 multiple-choice questions
- Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes
- Main topics: interpreting graphs, probability, sampling distributions, experimental design, and statistical inference
- Section 2: Free Response
- 6 free-response questions in total including one investigative task
- Includes one question about collecting data, one question about exploring data, one question about probability and sampling distributions, one question about inference, and one question combining two or more skill categories.
- The investigative task is one large, multi-part problem worth 25% of the FRQ section which assesses multiple skill categories and content areas, focusing on application in new or non-routine contexts.
Tips for success:
- Build a study plan
- Regularly schedule time weekly to practice the concepts
- After each lesson, review your notes and summarize the key ideas that you took away from each section
- Incorporate practice
- It is far more effective to include practice in your study plan, rather than just reading or watching videos.
- Practice writing full solutions with clear, strong explanations and incorporating feedback into future solutions.
- Use your calculator effectively
- Practice using your graphing calculators functions (specifically the 1-Var Stats, regression, normalcdf, binompdf, etc.)
- Understand how and when each function is used and practice explaining the purpose of using each function.
- Try certain exam-style questions by hand and with a TI-84 calculator
- Focus on interpretation and clear communication
- Tie your final answer back to the context of the problem. Ask yourself: what does this mean in a real-world context?
- Learn the correct statistical vocabulary (i.e. using words such as “sample” and population rather than “the people chosen to participate in the study” and “the entire group of people who we are studying”).
- Make sure your answers, much like good survey questions, are clear and unambiguous to avoid potential misinterpretations.

This course is designed to suggest specific sections and question sets that are most important for you to complete. The goal is to save you time; rather than reading the book cover to cover, it is more efficient to focus on concepts that you are less familiar with.

- This course includes 3 mock exams with grading and feedback that mirror the AP Statistics exam structure. This will help you identify further areas for improvement and suggest the most applicable material for your situation.
