Putting it all together
Get ready
Now that you’ve learned about passage types, question structures, reading techniques, and answer traps, it’s time to put everything together. The Multiple Choice section moves quickly and is designed to be tricky. A consistent strategy helps you stay clear-headed, even on difficult passages.
In the next chapter, you’ll work through one passage and question set. Use it to check how well you’re applying the ideas and strategies you’ve learned so far. Move carefully through the questions, eliminate incorrect answers, and double-check your final choices.
After every practice passage, section, or essay, take time to review your answers - especially the ones you missed. Pinpoint what went wrong:
- Did you misinterpret the text?
- Did you ignore the context?
- Did you fall for a common answer trap?
- Did you struggle to comprehend the passage?
Once you know the cause, you can choose the right fix.
If the problem was misinterpreting or misunderstanding the text, spend time reading and annotating texts from that era or literary movement.
If the problem was missing context or falling for an answer trap, practice with more passages and stick closely to your strategy.
For now, don’t worry about time limits. Work slowly and deliberately. It can also help to say each step of your strategy out loud until it feels automatic.
Whatever the mistake, treat it as information you can use. The goal of practice is to find what breaks down and adjust. You’ll have plenty more opportunities to practice with the full-length practice exam section.
