  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the accounting for impairment of intangible assets, including goodwill

Impairment of intangible assets

  • Occurs when carrying amount exceeds recoverable amount
  • Recoverable amount: higher of fair value less costs to sell and value in use
  • Impairment loss recognized in profit or loss

Goodwill impairment

  • Tested annually or when indicators of impairment exist
  • Allocated to cash-generating units (CGUs)
  • Impairment loss: excess of carrying amount over recoverable amount of CGU including goodwill
