Testing registration

Most students take the AMC at their school, as long as the school is a registered testing site. If your school isn’t offering the exam, you can register through another nearby host site, such as a school, university, or testing center.

Tips for test day

• Guess only when beneficial.

  • On the AMC 8, you should guess on every question, even if you’re unsure.
  • On the AMC 10/12, leave a question blank if you have no reasonable guess. You’ll still earn 1.5/6 points for leaving it blank. If you answer incorrectly, you’ll earn 0/6 points.

• Be practical.

  Use the practical strategies from the final chapter when you’re stuck. They can help you eliminate choices, narrow the problem down, and pick up points you might otherwise miss.

• Check your work.

  Careless mistakes are costly. If you have extra time, re-check your arithmetic, signs, and whether your answer matches what the question is asking.

• Efficiency is key.

  The early questions are usually the quickest. Since every question is worth the same number of points, it’s important to secure the easier points first. Work efficiently so you still have time to attempt every question.
