This section explains a few practical steps you can take to get ready for the ACT. It doesn’t include testable content, but it will help you plan your registration and prepare for test day.

Testing registration

1. Register for the ACT by visiting the official ACT website. You’ll create an account and choose your test date and location.

2. During registration, you’ll provide personal information, select a testing center, and decide whether to take the optional writing section.

3. Pay close attention to registration deadlines so you can get the test date you want. For the most up-to-date deadlines, see the ACT registration page.

Additional information

  • The ACT costs $65. There is an additional fee of $25 if you want to add on the writing portion, and an additional $4 fee if you want to add on the science section.

  • The ACT does not have a “passing score.” Instead, your composite score (ranging from 1 to 36) is based on the average of your section scores. Colleges set their own score requirements.

  • There is no limit to how many times you can take the ACT. If you wish to retake the ACT, you must wait until the next available test date.

  • You will not be able to use a formula sheet on the math portion. You will be able to use a calculator, but only certain ones are permitted. For details, see the ACT calculator policy.

  • You can choose to take the ACT either on paper or online. If you choose to test online, it’s administered at a testing center, not at home. These options will be available when you register.

  • You will be able to send your score to 4 colleges at no extra charge. If you need additional score reports, it will cost you $19 per college.

Tips

As you approach test day, we recommend the following to help you perform at your highest possible level:

  • Do your research.

Look up the score expectations for the colleges you’re considering, and set a score goal based on those targets. Since ACT scores can also qualify you for scholarships, check each college’s scholarship policies to see what scores they consider.

  • Identify and focus.

Identify and focus on your weak areas while maintaining strengths in subjects where you perform well. This helps you catch problem areas early and build overall test-taking confidence.

  • Review your email confirmation.

Before exam day, review your ACT email confirmation so you know the key appointment details (such as your test location, reporting time, and any required materials).

  • Bring your ID.

Regardless of how you are testing, bring one valid, government-issued identification document with a signature and picture, such as an unexpired driver’s license, passport, or military ID. Also, make sure the name on your ID exactly matches the name under which your exam is scheduled.

  • Arrive early.

Arriving early helps you check in on time and reduces last-minute stress.
