Congratulations! You’ve reached the end of the course. This section walks you through the next step: registering for the test and planning for test day.
Testing registration
The Praxis Core: Writing (5723) is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). You can take it on its own, or you can take it alongside Praxis Reading (5713) and Math (5733) by registering for the Praxis Core Combined Test (5752).
To register, you’ll need to create an ETS Praxis account (if you haven’t already). Go to the Praxis registration page to create your account, register, and choose a test date.
Additional information
The test is offered on college campuses and at Prometric testing sites across the country. In some cases, you may also be able to take it from home with remote supervision.
- Make sure the name you use to register matches your primary form of identification exactly. If it doesn’t, you may not be allowed to take the exam.
- Check whether your state requires additional tests here.
- Each of the three sections - Reading, Writing, and Math - costs $90 to take. If you register to take all three at once, it costs $150.
Each state sets its own passing score on a 100–200 scale; check your state’s requirement at praxis.ets.org.
You can retake the test as many times as needed, but you must wait at least 28 days between test dates. You’ll also need to pay the test fee again, but there is no additional retake fee.
Testing accommodations are available for test-takers who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA). To see whether you qualify and how to apply, check here.
Dump sheet
Many test takers use “dump sheets” as study supplements and as a way to create a legal reference during the exam. A dump sheet typically includes visual guides and condensed notes on key topics. The idea is to memorize the material ahead of time and then “dump” it onto your notepad at the beginning of the exam.
These are allowed in the test center as long as they are created after the test has started (and not during the initial tutorial). They aren’t required to succeed, but some test takers find them helpful.

Final thoughts
On test day, focus on the basics that help you perform consistently:
- Get enough sleep the night before.
- Eat a solid breakfast.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
- Arrive early (or log in early, if testing remotely) so you have time to handle check-in steps.
- Keep an eye on the clock in each section — the writing test has three separately timed sections, so pace yourself within each one rather than trying to save time across sections.
- Trust your preparation. You’ve practiced the outline, the essay, and the grammar rules — approach test day the same way you approached your practice sessions.
