One of the seven MBLEx topics is “Benefits and Effects of Soft Tissue Manipulation”. The phrase “soft tissue manipulation” is just a formal way of saying "all of the things the therapist does to the client with their hands, other tools, and heat and cold during massage”. MBLEx questions in this topic focus on what clients get from massage and the physiological mechanisms by which those beneficial effects occur. According to the MBLEx authors you should expect that around 15 of your 100 MBLEx questions will focus on this topic. Topics to focus your studying on include:
- Physiological effects of soft tissue manipulation: MBLEx questions may ask about how massage benefits specific tissues, organs, and organ systems, as well as the physiology of how those benefits occur. They may also ask you to classify those beneficial effects as either “mechanical” or “reflex” effects (TK Internal link). You may also be asked to name the mechanical forces (TK internal link) you apply to the body in order to create those effects, which is different from naming strokes (TK internal link).
- Stroke type and sequence: MBLEx questions in this topic may ask you to link the name of a stroke with a description of the stroke or specific benefits that are associated with the stroke. Some of these stroke names may match what you learned in massage school and others may differ. The stroke names I am using below come from official MBLEx guidance and practice questions (TK internal link) unless otherwise noted.
- Heat and cold: Sometimes the manual bodywork you provide will be aided by the application of heat and cold, each intended to produce specific effects in the body. MBLEx questions may ask about the mechanisms of how heat and cold help, as well as when and how to apply them.
- Psychological effects of soft tissue manipulation: In addition to asking about the physiological benefits and effects of massage, MBLEx questions may ask about the psychological benefits of massage.
