Welcome to the Achievable CIMA BA1 Course.

BA1, Fundamentals of Business Economics, is often the starting point for the CIMA qualification and a key step toward the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation. It introduces the economic and operating context of business - how competition, financial markets, and government economic policy can influence an organisation. The aim is to build the economic literacy you’ll use throughout the rest of the CIMA professional qualification.

This course follows the BA1 syllabus closely. Each chapter focuses on one exam area and explains ideas step by step, with worked examples to show how the concepts are used. You’ll also find practice questions that reflect the structure and style of the real exam, so you can get used to the kinds of tasks you’ll be asked to do and how to approach them efficiently.

Eligibility

The BA1 exam is open to students who have registered with CIMA.

There are no additional eligibility requirements to sit BA1 itself. However, to begin the CIMA qualification, you must register as a student with CIMA.

If you have a relevant degree or accounting qualification, you may be eligible for exemptions. BA1 is still the typical starting point for most students.

Exam format

CIMA BA1 is a computer-based objective test. You’ll sit the exam on a computer at a Pearson VUE testing centre.

  • The exam consists of 60 objective test questions.
  • The exam duration is 2 hours (120 minutes).
  • The passing score is a scaled score of 100 out of 150. You will receive your result as “pass” or “fail” immediately at the test centre, with official confirmation appearing in your MY CIMA account within 48 hours.

Content outline

The BA1 syllabus is structured around four key areas, as defined by CIMA:

  • Macroeconomic and Institutional Context of Business (Syllabus A): Understanding the national and global economic environment, including government objectives, fiscal and monetary policy, and the role of international institutions.
  • Microeconomic and Organisational Context of Business (Syllabus B): Exploring market structures, pricing strategies, and the behaviour of consumers and firms.
  • Informational Context of Business (Syllabus C): Examining the data and information available to support management decision-making and economic analysis.
  • Financial Context of Business (Syllabus D): Understanding the financial system, including the role of financial markets and institutions.

The exam uses a mix of multiple-choice and other objective test question formats. Each area is weighted to reflect its importance in the overall syllabus.

Tips for success

Build steady study habits and keep your work consistent.

  • Read through the material and complete each chapter.
  • Do the assigned reviews regularly.
  • Use short, frequent study sessions (for example, 20-30 minutes a day) to make studying part of your routine.

As the exam gets closer, you can increase your study time. BA1 is a fundamentals exam, but the concepts you learn here will come up again throughout the CIMA qualification, so it’s worth taking the time to build a strong foundation.

Final thoughts

The textbook’s wrap-up section includes practical details about sitting the BA1 exam, including how to register, exam cost, and test-taking options.

Work through the course in the order provided: start with the textbook content, then move into practice problems and exams. Regular practice matters because it helps you apply the concepts under exam-style conditions and strengthens the decision-making skills you’ll use in management accounting.
