Welcome to Achievable’s California Insurance Code and Ethics course

If you’re planning to take a California insurance licensing exam, this course helps you meet the state’s education requirement for ethics and the California Insurance Code.

Why this course exists

The California Department of Insurance (CDI) has updated the education requirements to qualify for the state licensing exam. Candidates are no longer required to complete a 40-hour pre-license education course.

Instead, the CDI now requires only:

  • 12 hours of approved instruction on:
    • Insurance ethics
    • The California Insurance Code
  • Including at least 1 dedicated hour on insurance fraud

This Achievable course is designed to meet that 12-hour requirement. Once you complete it, you’ll have satisfied the education prerequisite needed to be eligible to take the state licensing exam.

Important: The exam did not get easier

Even though the pre-license education requirement has been reduced, the state licensing exam itself has not been simplified.

The exam still tests you on:

  • Policy concepts and core insurance principles
  • Coverages, provisions, and definitions
  • Real-world scenarios and application-based questions
  • Plus ethics and the California Insurance Code

In other words, the state didn’t “shrink” the test - they lowered the minimum education you must complete before taking it.

Because of this, it is strongly recommended that you complete the full Achievable pre-license course in addition to this California Insurance Code and Ethics material.

  • This course = satisfies the CDI minimum requirement
  • The full Achievable Pre-license course = prepares you to actually pass the exam with confidence

What you’ll get in this course

This focused course will walk you through:

  • California Insurance Code (CIC) basics and key exam-tested sections
  • Ethical duties of agents, brokers, and insurers
  • Market conduct and unfair practices
  • Insurance fraud: definitions, red flags, reporting duties, and penalties
  • The role of the California Department of Insurance and regulatory framework

You’ll see:

  • Clear, plain-language explanations of legal terms and requirements
  • Practical examples that connect law and ethics to real-world situations
  • Review questions to help you lock in key concepts

How to use this course with Achievable’s full program

For the best results:

  1. Complete this course to satisfy your 12-hour ethics & insurance code requirement.
  2. Work through the full Achievable Pre-license course for your chosen line(s) of authority (life, health, property & casualty, etc.).
  3. Use Achievable’s adaptive practice questions and exams to build speed, confidence, and test readiness.

This combo gives you both:

  • The legal eligibility to sit for the exam, and

Insurance is a profession built on trust, responsibility, and service. This course focuses on the compliance side - ethics, the California Insurance Code, and fraud - so you can meet the requirement and understand how the rules apply in real situations.

CDI education requirement changes
