How to use this list

This page collects the prefixes, roots, and suffixes from the previous three chapters into a single reference. A word is usually built from three kinds of parts: a prefix added to the front, a root that carries the core meaning, and a suffix added to the end. Combining their meanings - and checking the result against the sentence - lets you work out words you’ve never seen before.

  1. Note the suffix first. It often signals the part of speech (-ion makes a noun, -ly an adverb), and many suffixes add meaning of their own (-less “lacking,” -cide “killing,” -itis “inflammation”), so keep that meaning when you combine the parts.
  2. Identify the root (and any prefix), and combine their meanings.
  3. Check that combined meaning against the sentence the word appears in, and test it against the answer choices. Some parts carry more than one meaning (sol is “alone” in solitary but “sun” in solar; ped is “foot” in pedal but “child” in pediatric), so let the sentence decide which meaning fits.

Example: Decoding an unfamiliar word

Take the word malediction. The suffix -ion marks it as a noun (“act or result of”). The prefix mal- means “bad,” and the root dict means “say” - together, a “bad saying,” or a curse.

Sentence: “The witch muttered a malediction over the well.”

The context (a witch, muttering) confirms the negative, speech-related meaning.

Using word parts to decode vocabulary

  • Words break into prefix (front, modifies meaning), root (core meaning), suffix (end, often signals part of speech: -ion = noun, -ly = adverb)
  • Process: identify suffix first → combine root/prefix meaning → test combined meaning against the sentence and answer choices
  • Some roots have multiple meanings (e.g., sol = “alone” or “sun”; ped = “foot” or “child”) — context determines which applies
  • Example: malediction = mal- (“bad”) + dict (“say”) + -ion (noun) = a curse, confirmed by context

Prefixes

  • Organized by function: negation/absence (a-, dis-, in-, non-, un-), numbers (uni-, bi-, tri-, quad-, cent-), size/quantity (micro-, macro-, multi-, omni-, semi-), direction/position (ab-, ad-, circum-, inter-, sub-, trans-), time/order (re-, neo-, prot-), comparison (hetero-, homo-, hyper-, hypo-), and condition/quality (dys-, mal-, mis-)
  • Many prefixes share meanings (e.g., both in- and non- mean “not”; both ante- and pre- mean “before”) — recognize families rather than memorizing each separately

Roots

  • Grouped by theme: human/society/emotion (cred=“believe”, dem=“people”, phil=“love”), body/health/senses (card=“heart”, derm=“skin”, vis=“see”), nature (aqua/hydr=“water”, geo=“earth”, pyr=“fire”), time/change (chron=“time”, gen=“birth”, mut=“change”), movement/conflict (duc=“lead”, ject=“throw”, vert=“turn”), language/knowledge (dict=“say”, scrib=“write”, sci=“know”), physical qualities (dur=“hard”, fort=“strength”, rect=“straight”), and work/process (fac=“make”, struct=“build”, frac=“break”)
  • Watch for roots with dual meanings depending on context (sol: “alone” vs. “sun”; ped: “foot” vs. “child”)

Suffixes

  • Categorized by what they signal: people/roles (-er, -ist, -ian = person who does/is), states/qualities (-ity, -ness, -ous, -ful = quality or condition), actions/results (-ion, -ment, -ize, -ify = process or result of an action), description/resemblance (-ish, -oid, -esque = “like” or “resembling”), and knowledge/science (-logy = study of, -itis = inflammation, -ism = belief system)
  • Suffixes often signal part of speech (e.g., -ly → adverb, -ful → adjective, -ment → noun), and many add meaning of their own (-less = lacking, -cide = killing)

Key points

Using word parts to decode vocabulary

  • Words break into prefix (front, modifies meaning), root (core meaning), suffix (end, often signals part of speech: -ion = noun, -ly = adverb)
  • Process: identify suffix first → combine root/prefix meaning → test combined meaning against the sentence and answer choices
  • Some roots have multiple meanings (e.g., sol = “alone” or “sun”; ped = “foot” or “child”) — context determines which applies
  • Example: malediction = mal- (“bad”) + dict (“say”) + -ion (noun) = a curse, confirmed by context

Prefixes

  • Organized by function: negation/absence (a-, dis-, in-, non-, un-), numbers (uni-, bi-, tri-, quad-, cent-), size/quantity (micro-, macro-, multi-, omni-, semi-), direction/position (ab-, ad-, circum-, inter-, sub-, trans-), time/order (re-, neo-, prot-), comparison (hetero-, homo-, hyper-, hypo-), and condition/quality (dys-, mal-, mis-)
  • Many prefixes share meanings (e.g., both in- and non- mean “not”; both ante- and pre- mean “before”) — recognize families rather than memorizing each separately

Roots

  • Grouped by theme: human/society/emotion (cred=“believe”, dem=“people”, phil=“love”), body/health/senses (card=“heart”, derm=“skin”, vis=“see”), nature (aqua/hydr=“water”, geo=“earth”, pyr=“fire”), time/change (chron=“time”, gen=“birth”, mut=“change”), movement/conflict (duc=“lead”, ject=“throw”, vert=“turn”), language/knowledge (dict=“say”, scrib=“write”, sci=“know”), physical qualities (dur=“hard”, fort=“strength”, rect=“straight”), and work/process (fac=“make”, struct=“build”, frac=“break”)
  • Watch for roots with dual meanings depending on context (sol: “alone” vs. “sun”; ped: “foot” vs. “child”)

Suffixes

  • Categorized by what they signal: people/roles (-er, -ist, -ian = person who does/is), states/qualities (-ity, -ness, -ous, -ful = quality or condition), actions/results (-ion, -ment, -ize, -ify = process or result of an action), description/resemblance (-ish, -oid, -esque = “like” or “resembling”), and knowledge/science (-logy = study of, -itis = inflammation, -ism = belief system)
  • Suffixes often signal part of speech (e.g., -ly → adverb, -ful → adjective, -ment → noun), and many add meaning of their own (-less = lacking, -cide = killing)
