Wrapping up

You’ve now reached the end of the Achievable AP Calculus AB Course. At this point, you should have a solid working foundation in differential and integral calculus, along with the problem-solving habits you’ll use on the AP exam and in later STEM courses.

Testing registration

You’ll register for the AP Calculus AB exam through your high school’s AP coordinator. The College Board doesn’t allow students to self-register without going through a school.

Check with your school early in the fall, since registration deadlines are usually in October or November.

Exam costs

The AP exam costs $99 in the U.S., though fees may vary by school. Students with financial need may be eligible for reduced fees.

View the AP exam fees page on the College Board for more information.

Passing score

AP exams are scored on a scale of 1-5. A score of 3 is generally considered passing, but many colleges award credit or placement for a score of 4 or 5.

Additional information

The AP Calculus AB exam is offered once per year in May. If you don’t pass, you can retake it the following year.

No formula sheet is provided on the exam. A graphing calculator is required for Part B of the multiple choice section and Part A of the free response section.

The Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook. If you plan to bring your own calculator, check the Calculator policy page on the College Board for the list of approved calculators.

Accommodations

Students who need accommodations (such as extended time) must apply through the College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) in advance of testing day. Learn more on the College Board’s Accommodations page.

Testing options

Currently, AP exams are administered in person at schools or authorized testing centers. Virtual options are not offered.

Tips

To prepare for testing day:

  • Get a good night’s sleep before the exam - don’t cram!
  • Bring your calculator, pencils, and an approved photo ID.
  • Arrive early and use any extra time to relax and focus.
  • Answer every question, even if you’re unsure - there’s no penalty for guessing.
